More Than One Way to Learn: Listen to the A String Thing Podcast

If you’ve taken a class with me, you already know one of the things I say all the time: there is more than one way to do this.

That idea is at the heart of A String Thing and it’s also something I wanted to talk about in a different way. So this time, instead of writing about it, I turned on the microphone.

In this podcast episode, I talk about learning, teaching, and why finding the method that works for you can make all the difference when you’re learning to knit or crochet.

You don’t have to learn the “right” way

One of the biggest things I’ve learned from teaching is that a technique that works beautifully for one person may be completely wrong for the next person.

Sometimes we change how the yarn is held. Sometimes we change tools. Sometimes we try a completely different technique. And sometimes we put one craft aside, learn another one, and discover that the first one suddenly makes more sense.

That’s why I don’t believe struggling with a technique means you can’t do it. It usually means we haven’t found your way yet.

I talked about some of that same fear and frustration in my post, Why Adults Are So Afraid of Making Mistakes When Learning a Craft. The two ideas really go together: being willing to make mistakes and being willing to try another way are both part of learning.

So give the podcast a listen, and then I’d love to hear from you.

Have you ever struggled to learn something until someone showed you a different way?

And if knitting or crochet is the thing you’re struggling with right now, come learn with me.

Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime.
